Results: TutorsWhen I decided to take the Tutoring Course I did not realize how fulfilled I would feel. Having done the Basic Study Manual and now having worked with students I can say that it has been great. My outlook on tutoring, what and how to teach has completely changed. I feel totally competent to go out and increase the number of students I see and know I can handle it. As a former student of the "old school", having this form of learning how to learn taught to me was great. I remembered many of my own days in studying and at the end of the day not remembering or understanding any more than I did before. I can see how learning could have been more fun and productive. Now through this course I have learned the barriers and how to deal with them. With this new knowledge I can teach and help others. Learning can be fun and you can learn about anything you want to learn about! During the past three months I have learned a more basic and positive way to help the students I presently work with in the tutoring program. In taking this course I feel it has enabled me to feel more comfortable in working with the students in our tutoring program as well as helping my own children achieve better academic success. Knowing how to recognize when someone is having difficulty and why they may react with different behavior and also being able to recognize what each type of behavior means, will definitely help me to be more of a benefit to each student. The Study Technology contains powerful tools for tutoring and it works. I work with kids that spend thousands of dollars on other systems. Where it takes them days and days, it takes me only hours to get results with kids. It is the workability and simplicity of it that I like. I have been using it for 6 years and have tutored two to three hundred students. Being an Applied Scholastics tutor is the best job I have ever had. Day in and day out I am changing the lives of kids. They learn how to study and even though I only tutor math, many kids improve in other subjects as well. The following are a few of my successes. One student would sadly ask me almost every time we met, “Do you think I’m stupid?” Now, she acts the opposite — confident and is often telling me how brilliant she is. Lauren was brought to me after failing Algebra 1. Math had been so upsetting for her that she would often get physically ill while doing homework. She was resentful and less than thrilled to be spending her summer doing math. We started by reading Learning How to Learn by L. Ron Hubbard. Then we started in on the “M” word. Little by little she brightened up and became confident and competent. We built the foundation she needed for algebra. She retook Algebra 1 and got an “A” all the way through with little help from me. Alaina came to me at the end of third grade very confused. Over the summer we reviewed math and read Learning How to Learn. Come fall she did so well in school that she got her first “A” in math and was tested for the gifted program. Having the tools from Applied Scholastics to really help the kids makes you stand out from other tutors. The parents see the difference and have been very supportive. My job as a tutor is not only rewarding but fun and easy. What a satisfaction I get when the children I work with start smiling and really "get" what they're studying. The real frosting on the cake is how easy it is to obtain these results. If I standardly use and teach others the Applied Scholastics Study Technology I get stellar results EVERY time. I can't imagine tutoring children without this! I have been a tutor with Applied Scholastics for two years. It has been very satisfying using Study Technology to teach my students. They have had so many wins. I have one particular student who more than doubled his score on a reading test in six months. His mother is so pleased that she is referring other students to me.
